Prof Shyam S Rai (Chair, Earth & Climate Science, IISER Pune) has been conferred with the “National Award in Geoscience and Technology” for 2016 by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India.
The prestigious award was presented to him in New Delhi on July 27 which was celebrated as the 10th anniversary and Foundation Day of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (2006-2016). The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and a citation.
Prof Rai has been given this award in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the area of “Geosciences and Technology”. He is also an awardee of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prize and a fellow of all three national academies of science in India. Prof Rai is a geophysicist working in the area of geoelectromagnetism and tectono-physics. His work involves using seismological data to understand the structure of the earth and processes that go on in its interior. His group also works on geophysical data modelling and deep earth exploration. You can learn more about his work here.
